Core Stability

When supple elasticity has been restored and the overstressing of joints has been eliminated it is vitally important to couple this with the strengthening of the posture muscles. The reason for this is that the spine is inherently unstable and relies on the muscles for support, specifically the smaller and deeper spinal and trunk muscles. When these muscles are strengthened, the spine and pelvis are stabilised, which helps to create a strong base of support. Without this base of support, the mechanical efficiency of the spine is likely to weaken. Core strengthening exercises, for example through Pilates, can help to improve this base of support. However, if the joints are still being excessively stressed then these exercises may exacerbate the patient's complaint which is why it is important to improve the mechanics of the spine before attempting them.
